In this project we researched an environmental disaster and identified the key chemical pollutants involved. We also studied and reflected on how toxic spills impact individuals & communities.
Board game:
We used Andres's Pecha Kucha as the natural disaster for our board game. The name of the game is Barrio, It is a dice rolling game (just like everyone else's) where you have to follow the track to the docks to leave the Methyl Bromide-Infested city. We took a picture of Barrio logan and Everett traced it onto a sheet of wood. I mixed paint to come up with different colors for the tiles and the board. The hardest part was probably taping off each individual tile and painted it a certain color.
Infographic:
The main chemical that affects Barrio Logan is Methyl Bromide, it is released by the ship building company, NASSCO. It causes early deaths, breathing issues, vision issues and internal organ failure.
Pecha Kucha:
This is Andres Figueroa's Pecha Kucha for our natural disaster project. It focuses on the people around Barrio Logan that are affected by this chemical.
I learned that some groups you get put into for projects might not always be dedicated to doing work so you end up having to take over. Now whenever I get placed into a group I prepare just in case I have to do more work than what I anticipate. Painting the tiles individually has definitely helped me with my painting skills and patience because I had to tape off each individual tile (there was 132 of them!).
